Benjamin J. Townsend, son of Jacob and Sarah (Brownell) Townsend was married 17 Mar 1861 in Columbiana Co., OH to Lydia Yates Votaw, and was the father of Delos K. Townsend (1861 - before 1925); Loren G. Townsend (1863 - before 1925); Sarah Bennetta Townsend (1865 - after 1927); Ira B. Townsend (1867 to before 1925); Vivian "Charles" Simeon Townsend (1878-1961). Benjamin was a Quaker and spoke using many thees and thous per my great aunt. He served in the Civil War in Mar 1864 as a Qtr. Mstr. Sgt. Co. C 56th PA Inf. and transferred to Co. B. 14th PA Calvary. He was promoted to Full 2nd Liet. and mustered out in Aug 1865. He and Lydia divorced and he married again in 1894 to a T.E. according to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Janesville, Rock. Co. WI. He is buried in the G.A.R. portion of the Oakwood Cemetery in Beloit, Rock County, WI.
