John Dunphy worked in the lumbering industry along the Miramichi and Kennebec Rivers settling in Gardiner, ME. He married Martha Ann Powers, b. 7 Sep 1826 in Fairfield, Somerset County, Maine who was the daughter of a traveling Baptist minister, at Augusta, ME in 1848. They had 4 children before moving to Minn. & Wisc and had 7 more. John founded Dunphy Boat Company to service the needs of the loggers and river drivers of the area and had contracts that included the Federal Govt. starting with the Civil War and through WW II. Private commissions came to include a fleet for the Dells Recreation area in Wisconsin and were compared to Chris Craft, Century, and GarWood Companies in both service rendered to the Govt. and quality of manufacture. The Dunphy Co. lasted over 100 years in various locations as they persued their markets and resources. John and Martha Dunphy have been photographed with John displaying a ribbon & insignia of membership in the Grand Army of the Republic probably Eagle Post #52. Membership in this organization was limited to veterans of the Civil War, though records have not been found yet to confirm his enlistment or service. Probably due to the poor record keeping of the day and regional fires at the armory and town hall of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
