Thomas G. West was a tie cutter and hauler by trade and a champion in competition. He was known for being unwilling to lean against a tree to take a break at work. He married three times between ages 22 and 37. The first two wives, I am searching for. The third, my dear great-grandmother was Mary Katherine Hirby. They married in Metropolis, IL while living in Ballard County, KY. Later, while living in Ripley County, MO, they ran the county poor farm. Thomas was blinded after age 71 while trying to save someone from a burning house. He is buried in a grave in Bethany Amity Cemetery, Ripley County, MO marked only by a hand carved rough stone marked with his years of birth and death.
