John Pinkerton was born March 24, 1763. Native of Ireland. Came to Chester, South Carolina in 1791; later to Due West, in Abbeyville County, South Carolina. He was a farmer and owned slaves. He did not like the institution of slavery. Hopewell Associate Reformed or Convenater Church was organized in 1812. In 1815, John made a trip to Preble County; returned and with six or seven families, Reuben C. and Andrew Weede among them, and with Reverend Alexander Porter, moved to Preble County after freeing their slaves. The group began the journey to Ohio on a Thursday. On Saturday evening, the question arose as to whether they should travel on the Sabbath Day. About half the group decided not to, and the other half continued on their journey. The two groups arrived at the same time. The persons and animals that did not travel on Sunday arrived in better condition. John was elected State Representative from Preble County in 1818, and again in 1820 (Republican Party). The original Associate Reformed Church in Chester, South Carolina was named Hopewell. The Hopewell Church in Preble County became large so a new church was built in Fairhaven in 1834. John joined the new church. Its cemetery was opened in 1846. John died in 1852, evidently of cerebral thrombosis, and was probably buried in Fairhaven Cemetery, although early historians said it was Hopewell.
John traveled with his son Thomas Pinkerton, who became a ruling elder in Hopewell Church. Also, John travelled with another of his sons, William.
