From the East Liverpool (OH) Saturday Review, 23 May 1885, p2, c2:
Killed by the Cars
a very sad and fatal accident occurred in our midst yesterdat morning. Mr. Nicholas Emge, of Marietta, had come to East Liverpool o n Thursday nighht to visit his two sons and a daughter, who lived on Seventh street, with a view of making his home with them. He started early in the morning to look after an express package at the depot, and while walking on the railroad track an east bound freighht train was nearing the station. Stepping from this track to a side track where a train at the time was making a flying switch, one of the cars struck him, fracturing his legs and head. He was carried in an unconscious condition into the waiting room of the station, where Drs. J. J. and G. P. Ikirt did all they could for the temporary relief of the unfortunate man, making him as comfortable as was possible under the circumstances. The injured man was supposed to be an unknown stranger, until one of his sons identified him as beng hi father, after which he was taken to his childrens' home on Seventh street, where he died a few minutes afterward. The man was quite deaf and about forty-five years of age.

From the Marietta Semi Weekly Register, May 26, 1885, p3, c2:
.....The sad intelligence of the death of Nick Emge reached here, Friday afternoon, from East Liverpool. It was a surprise to everybody, as he had been out of town so short a time that people had not missed him. He was an excellent sign painter and always had plenty of work. Being deaf probably accounts for his death. The Wheeling Intelligencer of the 23d says: "A man named Nick Emge was run over by a freight train at East Liverpool at 7 o'clock this morning, and so badly injured that he died at 11 o'clock. He arrived in ton from Marietta last evening on a visit to his children who are living here. This will make the second death that has occurred within six months by the making of a running switch, which is directly contrary to the law of the State."

From the Marietta Times, May 28 1885, p3, c2:
..Nick Emge, a well known deaf painter of this city, was killed by being run over by a train of cars at East Liverpool, Ohio, last Friday. he had just arrived in that place and had gone there to visit som (sic) of his children who reside there. Th railroad employes (sic) were making what is known as a running switch, and Emge had succeeded in getting off one track, but was caught by the switched train on the other. The Railroad would be liable in damages if Emge's friends bring suit.
