EARLY SETTLER PASSES AWAY
Ferdinand Eckstein Succumbs of Long Illness
In County 65 Years
Came to this Country at Age of 12 Years, With Parents - Funeral to be
Held Saturday
Death long expected, came to relieve Ferdinand Eckstein Sr., of a
prolonged period of suffering yesterday morning. The silent messenger
came at 6:15 o'clock and without warning as the patient was being removed
from his bed to a chair, as was his daily wont.
Mr. Eckstein's death is the result of an illness extending over a period
of four years. Heart and kidney trouble and growing age were too much
for the rugged constitution and iron will and the patient, although
holding out strongly up to a few month ago, ultimately relinquished his
claim on life and resigned himself to the inevitable. For five months
past he had been confined to his bed, but almost daily arose, with the
assistance of attendants, whose services were required constantly for him.
The life of Mr. Eckstein has been associated with Woodford county almost
from its infancy. Born at Hesstein, Germany, April 22, 1832, he came to
this country with his parents and two sisters when he was 12 years of
age, about 65 years ago. The family settled in Worth township , about 2
miles north of the present Lourdes church. Here the deceased grew to
manhood, and at the age of 25 was married to Lizzie Berkman, who survives
him. Six children were born to the couple, three boys and three girls.
Three of these survive, John J. Eckstein, Mrs. John Schierer and Mrs.
Michael Schierer. Besides there are 25 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. John E. Muller of Goodland, Ind.
also survives.
Mr. Eckstein resided in Worth township until about 24 years ago, when he
moved to Spring Bay , where he remained for several years. In 1847 he
moved into Metamora and since made his home here.
The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock. The remains
will be taken to St . Mary's church at this place at that time, where
final services will be held.
