I just started my quest for looking into the Rothans' history. I believe Nicholas was my Great Uncle. His brother, Joseph, was my Great Grandfather. I looked at the 1870 Ohio census and it states that Nicholas was still living with his parnet, John and Gertude, but you said that he was married to Emma in 1867? Can you help. The dates don't fit. Message #6 Wednesday, August 30, 2000 Subject: Hello Rothan cousin!!! Posted by: Kathy O'Duggan Giuliani Message: Hi Cynthia!!! I was thrilled to see your message! I have always puzzled over that census info myself, but I have the church record for Nicholas & Emma from St Anthony's Catholic Church in Cincinnati dated April 30, 1867. It is also documented in Nicholas' Civil War pension records. Their oldest son John Julius was born February 11, 1868, so HE should be listed there w/the rest of them, too!!! Also, Justina Elizabeth had married by this time, too & had at least 2 of her children by 1870, so I wish I could explain the error. I haven't found Nicholas & Emma listed anywhere else in Cincinnati. Perhaps they were away??? Perhaps Gertrude & Johan misunderstood the census taker's questions?? I guess we'll never know (they are not w/Emma's parents). Your John Joseph was also in the Civil War (Navy) & I have his pension records also. Is your grandfather John Joseph (married to Mary Sullivan)??? Or Frederich Aloisius??? I can't wait to see what you have on that branch...please be in touch soon, we have a lot of stuff to share!!! Thanks in advance!! Message #7 Thursday, August 31, 2000 Subject: The Rothan Family Posted by: Hello Rothan cousin Message: Hi Kathy, I'm so excited that you returned my message. My Dad's parents were John Joesph and Mary Sullivan. My Dad, John Joseph Jr., is a change of life baby born in 1918 in Peoria Ill. John and Mary also had two other children, Russell and Margaret. I never knew my grandfather for he died in 1951 before I was born. I know He died of lung cancer. He smoked 3 packs a day. Mary Sullivan lived with us from time to time. I knew her quite well. She would tell me stories about the horse and buggy days. She was a small woman (4'9") but was tough as nails. She broke her hip in 1969 and became bed ridden. She died July 18, 1971. I'm not sure about her age. She always told me she was born in 1875 but other records show 1878. I hope with more research I'll find the truth. My Dad, for some reason, does not remember. It's funny, some days he remembers detailed info. and other days he will forget where the bathroom is!! I've got to go. I'll write more later. BTW - I believe Joseph John was my great grandfather not John Joseph. I'm not sure if Joseph was in the Civil War but he was the oldest so he probably was. Do you have info on John and Gertude? Was her maiden name Rising? The 1870 census states that their estate was valued at $30,000. The house must of been hugh. Do you know if it is still standing?? I know about 1 sister- Barbara. She married Joseph Scherer & also lived in Peoria. I believe Gertrude's mother was named Magdelena. She is listed w/Johan & Gertrude in the 1850 census & was 59 yrs old. I was in Cinti 3 yrs ago for a Puttmann family reunion & dragged my husband to several cemeteries. We had to dig the ground w/sticks, but we were able to uncover Nicholas & Emma's graves as well as Johan & Gertrude's. Try not to let the position of the names confuse you. German families, I have been told, often named more than one child the same name. Apparently it had to do w/the high mortality rate of children in those times- at least 1 son would carry on the family name. My Nicholas is actually Joseph Nicholas, but he is always called Nicholas (except in government/army records). Gertrude was actually Mary Gertrude, but always called Gertrude....etc...The practice has driven me crazy w/all the Johns, Josephs, Marys, etc...
