The Corydon Democrat April 19, 1905 (pg. 1, Col. 5)
Death of Adam H. Reising
Adam H. Reising, Principal of the Corydon High School, died last Friday morning.
He had not been well for several weeks, but was down sick only few days. He had lagrippe in the winter & never fully recuperated. For several days he had symptoms of typhoid fever, but continued to work until there was such a collapse of the system that he lived but a few days after taking down, dying from exhaustion.
Mr. Reising was thirty-eight years old and was a son of Nicholas Reising who resides north of town. He had been a teacher in the public schools here four years and he was greatly beloved by al the pupils. He was thoroughly prepared for his work as he was a graduate from the Corydon High School and the State Normal at Terre Haute and had attended the University at Bloomington. He intended going to Bloomington this summer to continue his studies there. He was ambitious to go to the top in educational work. He was a hard student; he was a worker. When a term of his school closed he picked up his carpenter tools and worked hard. He did his duty as he saw it. He will be greatly missed, not only as a school teacher, but as a church worker. He was a teacher of a Sunday school class at the Christian church as well as asst. superintendent of that Sunday school. He will be missed in every work which required an effort on the part on conscientious people of this town or community.
The deceased leaves a wife & 2 children.
The funeral took place Sun. afternoon from the residence of the deceased conducted by Elder Grimes assisted by Revs. Irvine & Black and the remains were interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery in the presence of a concourse of mourners and sorrowing friends.
In the death of Prof. Reising, this town community and county has sustained an irreparable loss.
His death at this time, just as he was approaching the prime of his usefullness is indeed a calamity.
The people at large did not know his real worth. Only those who had met him intimately, professionally and otherwise knew Adam Reising. He was a model man in so many ways.
The most commendable and overshadowing principle of his life was his humility, his aversion to all show, pretension or self glorification.
He was pure minded and possessed the loftiest and noblest ideals Simple minded as a child, yet courageous in maintaining and acting out his convictions of right.
In his educational pursuit and professional work he went to the depth of things.
There was nothing superficial in his nature and this quality was always manifest in his search for knowledge. He mastered subjects and strove to have his students do likewise. He was a natural teacher, thorough in scholarship, methodical, an untiring worker, full of enthusiasm for his work & a lover of child nature.
The writer knows whereof he speaks for we saw him grow from a pupil in the district school at Hickman's up through the various graduations of his school life. We saw him graduate from the district school, issuing him a diploma; we saw him enter high school and graduate; we gave him a license to teach and witnessed his remarkable success as a teacher from his very first attempt; we saw his sucessful efforts in completing the course at the State Normal doing the work at intervals as his limited means would permit; we saw him work as teacher up through all the grades to the high school which position he held at his death; lastly we saw him establish himself in life by taking unto himself a dear companion, erecting a comfortable little home doing much of the work with his own hands at intervals from his school works and possessing a happy little family, including a devoted wife and two dear little daughters.
Why he should thus go at this time confounds us in mystery. Truly "In the midst of life we are in death." As was so beautifully illustrated at his funeral Sunday by one of the ministers- the storm in the forest uproots the tall oak as well as the smaller growth.
